The Best Attic Insulation Options for Your Home

To get the best performance and energy efficiency, you need to consider your attic insulation. With the right material, you can effectively reduce heat loss during the winter as well as retain cool air during the summer months. Here our roofing replacement experts at Lifestyle Home Improvement Roofing and Construction explain some of your best insulation options:

Blanket insulation. This is actually one of the most frequently purchased types of attic insulation material. Fiberglass batts are easily recognizable from their uncanny resemblance to cotton candy, and are made from delicate glass fibers that are composed of recycled material and sand. These batts come in large rolled-up sheets that are held together by an adhesive vapor barrier like reflective foil backing or paper.

Batts must be carefully trimmed so they fit snugly around vents in order to retain their effectiveness. The material is also available in mineral wool, plastic fibers and natural fibers. This type of insulation is ideal for attics with standard spaced beams and joists with few obstructions.

Loose/blown-in insulation. This type of insulation is also made from fiberglass, except it comes in tiny chunks packaged in large bags. Roofing contractors install this material by using a blowing machine that spreads the chunks to fill in necessary spaces. This type of insulation is sometimes recommended for attics with very little headroom and multiple obstructions such as vents and cross-beams. It’s also available in cellulose and mineral wool, and can be effectively blown over existing insulation.

Spray foam insulation. If you’re looking for a more effective material for your insulation, we recommend our spray foam services. Spray polyurethane foam forms a continuous barrier on walls, rafters and roofs which not only insulates, but seals gaps and stops leaks a well. This doesn’t just provide an effective air barrier; it also works as a blockade for heat and cold. Due to its density and hardness, it strengthens the structure of your attic and walls.
